Artists' model. To all full-figured women who think the are not beautiful, because they are not fashionably skinny. I encourage you to become an artists' models. For the classic academic drawing we actually prefer female models with some meat on their bones, with the body that is distinctively feminine, and with some fat at the exact places where it is supposed to be on a normal, healthy, not trendy, but universally and timelessly beautiful woman. Be an artists' model, get used to look at yourself through the eyes of people who are able to appreciate all sorts of beauty and all body types. Artists can show you an unique harmony that is you. No to mention that being naked in front of group of strangers is extremely liberating and works as the strongest self-steam booster ever.

Aleutie is back on Etsy, this time fully digital. I am using Etsy's new instant download feature, witch removes all hustle dealing with mail for me and reduce the price for the customers.

How it works: after the checkout process, you'll be taken to a page with a link to instantly download the file you choose (no watermark on that file of course). You also will receive an email with your download link - so it won't go anyway. And even if something goes wrong you always can send me a message and I e-mail you your file right away.

I am going to add new items every day, monitoring the customer's interest. There are four sections in the store right now:

"Cards and Invitations" holds files for - you guessed it - holiday cards and party invites. They are all .jpg files in high resolution, formatted to fit standard size cards that goes into standard size envelopes (5 by 7 or 5.5 square). Don't try to print it larger: you'll loose the sharpness

"Stickers and Labels" has files to print your own stickers that can go to canned preserves, notebooks etc. You ether print them on a regular paper and then glue onto whatever object you want to make extra special, or you can buy a special sticker paper and make real stickers on your home printer

"Digital illustrations" are mostly editorial illustrations designed to be used on Internet (and yes, now you can use my illustrations on your blog or web-site or social networking page). They are printable too, of course, and in very good resolution. You can make a poster with them, information brochures etc.

"Files for DIY prints" are big, high resolution .jpg illustrations that go on your wall. Download them, print and frame. I do believe that for many people now it will be easier and cheaper then paying for shipment, waiting for mail to arrive and worry if their print get all crumbled on the way. Let's see if I am right.

There is a long, but not too boring, Policy section that explained customer's licensing rights. I highly recommend reading it before downloading the files. In fact, you as a customer, have quite a lot of rights! You can make amazing things with my illustrations now. Just don't try to resell them and everything will be fine :)

Welcome to my new online shop, please don't hesitate to ask questions if anything need to be cleared. Hope it will be a success. Fingers crossed. Toes crossed. Fair Winds and Following Seas, Aleutie take two!
Drawing a live nude keeps you on your toes. First year students and professors are equal here. No artistic bs, no freedom of self-expression. For these two hours you have to be a realist. You just have to - no matter what is your artistic credo. Feels like home.

Did you know:

The Guinness-recognized oldest cat ever Creme Puff, who lived to be 38 years old, drank coffee every day. His he owner, Jake Perry, supported his cat's caffeine adiction, mostly because he was also the owner of the previous record holder, Grandpa Rex Allen. He was a coffe drinker as well and died at 34!

The northernmost land mass on Earth is called Coffee Club Island, or "Kaffeklubben Island" in Danish. This small island lying off the northern tip of Greenland and it's a part of Denmark. It was named after an informal "coffee club" of geographers that met regularly at the University of Copenhagen.

Originally coffee was not a beverage, but sort of an energy bar. Arabian tribes used to mix coffee berries with fat and form little energy balls.

Coffee is the second most traded commodity on Earth. The first one is oil. It's also is the second most popular drink on Earth after water.

It would take between 80 and 100 cups of coffee for a lethal dose of caffeine for an average adult. If you think it's a lot, you would like to now that legend has it that Voltaire drunk 50 cups of coffee per day, that daredevil. So, drink up!

It was a pretty chilly night, so I put on every piece of clothes I managed to find in a dark apartment. My hubby was sound asleep.
Celebrated LA visual artist Synthia Saint James spoke
yesterday in Washington State University. Doctor St. James was sporting one of
her many Chinese silk jackets: this one was a lovely turquoise blue with rich embroidery. Great painter with an impeccable instinct for
shape and color, she is also a uber-ninja of self-promotion. Excited public
went "awww" after every announcement of her next progressively
humanitarian and socially important project. It's funny how being in a spirit
of doing good and making positive change in the world makes an artist unmistakably
trendy.

I am sure that she's a perfectly nice lady and I know that she is an exceptionally talented artist with bold, unique vision, but I couldn't help but wonder: is she ever do something that wasn't aiming for Nobel peace prize? And does any speaker needs to be presented not by one, not two, but three people? And it wasn't helping that everybody, including people in the documentary they shown us, spoke about Ms. St James achievements in terms of quantity: she created this many book covers, made this and that many projects, won this and that award etc. And what with all the name-dropping: starting with people and ending with countries? Maybe I shouldn't be that sarcastic, but instead learn how to do marketing from a real master.

It's healthy to hold a real pen and pencil ones in a while instead of a computer mouse.

After a careful consideration of a bus schedule, sunlight angle and an annoying fact that I draw much better when I am interested in a subject and I can be interested in a subject only when it's new to me, I decided to travel to a yet unexplored part of a town. At 10 AM I was already climbing Sunnyside hill.

I was heading toward a big green spot on my map: Sunnyside park. "Nothing special, just a picnic area", - I was told before, so I didn't have very high expectations for the place. Well, what is the antonym for "disappointing"? "Appointing"? That was it. Very much appointing.

The park itself was, indeed, just a big open space with a small lake and a big gunge gym, occupied by the miniature Americans and their mommies. But all around the park life became very very interesting. First, I stumbled upon a small very old cemetery with moss-covered marble headstones and tall dry grass, where flocks of quails were galloping with panicking screams. California quails (Калифорнийский хохлатый перепел in russian) are so funny running with their little plums dangling! Absolutely ridiculous. Local small-eared bunnies are on the second place in redonkulous contest. Rabbits are timid in this area. I found Montreal rabbits to be much more cheeky.

There is a nice-size seep-and-llamas farm running alongside the Sunnyside park. I didn't understand if it was an interdependent business or they were affiliated with the park, but farm animals seemed to use park visitors for feeding. I mean they beg them for bred and such, not actually eating them. Children were ecstatic, and seep posed for picture suspiciously well.

The park hill also offered a nice tall vantage point. Great view on nearby farms and fields. This red barn on a concrete ground base was in such a perfect stage of picturesque shabbiness, I wondered if the owner knew it and preserved it this way.

It was a nice setting to do some fast people sketching and some portraits as well. Students brought their art and craft projects, DJ was spinning records and a corner bar provided mocktail ans cookies. I think I was the only one who was actually sketching. Many people drew, but it was more comic and fantasy style drawing. I was also the only person old enough to get a real cocktail (not that they have any).

My hubby is doing a project with Washington State University and I am doing the same I did in Montreal, just against a different backdrop.

Sketcher in a new city is like a kid in a candy store. Wherever you look - everything is new and fresh: landscapes, buildings, people, nature. Unfortunately, the weather doesn't cooperate. It was unusual dreary here and cold. I didn't see sun for two weeks and counting. So I found a refuge in the University's Conner museum, among birds and some other animals.
She Skiped me to show her freshly painted bare walls and said: "Jules, I really need you to draw me a picture or something that I could put up on the wall. Now it's so empty it's blinding". "Sure thing, - I answered bravely, - what kind of picture you'd like?" "Watercolor would be nice, - she said. - Paint some nice old building. You know I like all kind of ruins". "Absolutely! - I said. - There are plenty of old buildings in Montreal, I can whisk something up in no time!"

That was in February.

Yesterday I finally finished something that I could imagine hanging on a wall without being a total embarrassment for me and the owner of the house. I used Mark Taro's "tea - milk-honey" approach (THANK YOU FOR THE LAST POST, MARK!) and voila! - created a semi-decent watercolor. The best quality of it - it's finished. You can see it's a little bit forced and clumsy, but at least you can recognize Calvet house and not all the colors are coming straight from a crazy person's dream.

You know how I struggle with urban landscapes. For some reason I find it nearly impossible to get the proportions and perspective right, and I usually end up way far from reality and under- or over estimate dimensions by miles. Maybe I need a CAT scan. Strangely, I have no such problems while drawing people. I thought for quite long time why it is so difficult to me to draw a simple parallelepiped when I almost effortlessly dealing with much more complex shapes such as human faces.

Finally, today I had a big, BIG break-through.

My biggest trick when I draw people: I basically draw a caricature. When I observe the subject, I first imagine them looking like a Mad magazine cover. I just sort of soft it down on the way while I am drawing. And then the likeness stays and the grotesque goes.

And I thought: why don't I try to do the same with a landscape? Why don't I try drawing a caricature of the buildings? And then I just soft it down a little bit, so it wouldn't look too over the top. And I am telling you, people - that was by far my smartest idea this year!

Look at it - isn't it much prettier and cuter? This picture doesn't at all looks like somebody died creating it, right?

Before I was so preoccupied with realism, with getting the dimensions right and all the lines straight, I could barely move a pen - so much I was stressed and uptight. But after I remove a stick out of my ass - the world become oh so more inviting and simple. I can't wait to use my newly acquired wisdom at our next Urban Sketchers' outing.
I really wanted to see the marathon, so the rain couldn't stop me, the wind couldn't stop me, even the prospect of spending my Sunday in a company of about hundred thousand strangers couldn't stop me. And you know how I love crowds. I don't.

So, at 9 AM I was already getting wet at the strategically chosen front steps of an old house at the bend of Rue de la Commune. There were a few of us, waiting for the runners to show up right at the moment when they get down from the bridge. People were trying to figure out how to keep up with the runners on their way across the city: should we go to Maisonneuve next and meet them there, or go straight to park Lafontaine and wait at the finish line?

And I was trying to figure out what pen I could use in this drizzle? I quickly discovered that my water-resistant markers don't want to work on wet paper, while my ink pens work fine on wet, but smudges like crazy. Meanwhile, that 40% POP that was promised, were getting down on us with all 100% and some.

And then there were motorcycled cops coming and the leader of the marathon running from behind the street bend. Could it be David Savard-Gagnon? I honestly can't remember. But he was good 2 hundred meters ahead of the next two guys.

There was a few more leaders, and then the main group started to roll in. And it was infinite. 32000 people, as I read, took part in the race. I was just walking down the street, following the runners, trying to put on paper as much as I could. People cheering on two languages, runner tying up his lases, guys in rain ponchos at the refreshment tables, distributing energy drink (fluorescent orange liquid, that smelled like lemonade on acid), water and bananas' halves, and that fearless girl with a broom who were jumping in front of the runners and sweeping empty cups and banana peels away from under their feet.
The weather was very smudgy. I think it was perfect for running long distance race: +13C, overcast and drizzle. Brrrrr - perfect!
Looking for the next best sketching spot, I went up rue St Denis and met the runners at the corner of Maisonneuve and Berri. I had a few peaseful minutes in front of the Grand Biblioteque, on a road separator, before the security figured out that I am not affiliated to any newspaper and energetically shooed me away.
Finally, I found a perfect spot right above the Sherbrook overpass, where I could stand for 20 min undisturbed and sketch the runners, who were running up the hill at this stretch of the road ad conviniently slowing down. Gotcha!
At this point runners started deserting en messe. People in royal-blue tee-shirts, carrying little goody bags and numbers, filled the streets and spilled into a metro. I decided that it was time and went home: to dry my sketchbook and have a little snack. All this looking at other people running really tired me out. Frankly, there was not much of an action. I guess, you need a ticket to see it really going down. For the freeloaders like me they have only a sad line of local geeks - hardly 20% of them were in costumes - and an energetic bunch of green t-shirted benevoles, pushing brochures.

So I went down to the Old town and ended up having a nice little sketchcrawl of my own. It was drizzling on and off today and it stimulated me to practice fast sketching (proven to be the best kind of sketching). Apparently, if I don't sit down, I draw better, more precisely and definitely more expressively. So: bye-bye, folding chair, I guess.

Yesterday I finally got myself a James Richards' book. THE James Richards' book. GREAT STUFF! Naturally, today I tried to implement all the knowledge I drew from reading the first three chapters. And if you read the book, you can clearly see it in these sketches below:
But on my way back home I let myself relax a bit and get back to the thing I like the most: drawing unsuspected people who was unlucky enough to be on the same bus I ride. But this time I also drew cars!
Every summer Pointe Calliere Museum of Archeology and History organizes 18th-Century Public Market re-enactment at the heart of historic Old Montreal. From 10 AM this Saturday and Sunday Place d'Youville was filled with colorful characters, dressed up in historic costumes, looking - and behaving - as they existed in 1750, at the time of Montreal's very first public marketplace. Merchants and farmers sold "authentic" 18th century goods: maple products, honey and jams, cheeses and sausages, cider and spruce beer. Incredible musicians played weird antique instruments and singing old songs of New France. A military regiment fired salute with what I assumed were real old muskets and everybody exclaimed "Vive Le Roi!" Children could learn how to tie sailor’s knots, and how to write with a
quill pen, how to walk on stilts and how to work a machine, twisting
ropes. Dancers and storytellers entertained hundreds of peoples gathered to feel how it was to live here at 1750s.
Overall it was an incredible fun. Urban Sketchers Montreal joined the festivities and became a part of entertainment. Despite the horrible jet lag (I just got back from visiting my parents in Russia) I was determined to use the opportunity and draw a street scene - you know, the whole scene, with buildings and trees and lamps and people. Not as I usually do: just one building or one person, floating in empty white space. But it was.... too much. Overwhelming. Music, noise, smoke, heat, colors, people in perpetual motion - all I could do is to hastily catch some fragments, bits and pieces on paper.

My tiny red Moleskin was quickly filled with unfinished drawings: a strange figure there, a funny hat here. I stayed only till lunch and went home: reluctantly, but I was falling asleep on my feet. 11 hours time difference plus three century time shift made me dizzy.

Now it's half past midnight, I am fully awake and writing this, wondering when I will get back to normal.

My flight to Moscow was two hours late and my flight from Moscow on the way back was four hours late. Thank you, Aeroflot, for these splendid hours, spent in worrying about if I could make my next connection. I made the flight to Novosibirsk, but missed the connection to Montreal. Another two hours dealing with Air Canada and trying to get a seat on any plane, going the right direction. OK, let's call it adventure.

On a bright side: I had plenty of time to familiarize myself with interesting restaurants at Sheremetievo airport and it's colorful patrons.
